Stephen Bennett

Stephen Bennett is Senior Director of Mercury’s newly formed Climate and Catastrophe Science Division. The team will lead development of our company view of climate and catastrophe risks and the implementation and management of catastrophe models to help turn climate risk into opportunities for growth through innovation, efficiency, and strong collaboration across teams.

Steve has worked on climate and weather risk from multiple angles — advising companies like Apple and Unilever on operational resilience and supply chain optimization, supporting traders at Citadel with weather-informed investment strategies, and most recently at Demex, quantifying severe convective storm risk to structure parametric reinsurance.  Steve was also recently elected to serve as a councilor of the American Meteorological Society and chair the Forum on Climate Linked Economics. In addition, Steve teaches and mentors future leaders in risk management at UNC Chapel Hill’s Institute for Risk Management and Insurance Innovation.

Steve earned a BS in Meteorology from the University of South Alabama and a JD from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, as well as multiple certificates of industry leadership. Additionally, Bennett is an adjunct professor of Risk Management and Insurance at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He and his husband live in the Raleigh-Durham area, after relocating during the pandemic.
