College graduates have a lot of things to worry about once they finish school, and having a safe, affordable vehicle is at the top of the list for many graduates as they jump into the job market. They need reliable transportation to get to and from interviews and work, but for most graduates, money is a factor, so we created this list to help give them some guidance.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (May 17, 2019) – College graduates have many options when choosing a vehicle. Safety, reliability and affordability all factor into making the right decision, but insurance costs shouldn’t be overlooked. Mercury Insurance (NYSE: MCY) recently analyzed vehicles to determine the top ten safest and most affordable vehicles to insure for college graduates.

Mercury examined model-year vehicles from 2015-2018 with a 5-Star Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a Top Safety Pick+ or Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to compile its top-10 list of the safest and most affordable vehicles to insure. The list, beginning with the cheapest to insure, is based on a national average of Mercury’s price for full coverage[1] – liability, comprehensive and collision.

Here are the safest and most affordable vehicles to insure for college grads:

  1. 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe
  2. 2015 Kia Soul
  3. 2016 Kia Sportage
  4. 2016 Honda CR-V
  5. 2016 Hyundai Elantra
  6. 2017 Hyundai Tucson
  7. 2017 Honda CR-V
  8. 2017 Kia Soul
  9. 2016 Kia Sorento
  10. 2016 Hyundai Tucson

“These cars perform well in crash tests and some are equipped with technology to help avoid, or mitigate the damage from a collision,” said Kevin Quinn, vice president of claims for Mercury Insurance. “College graduates have a lot of things to worry about once they finish school, and having a safe, affordable vehicle is at the top of the list for many graduates as they jump into the job market. They need reliable transportation to get to and from interviews and work, but for most graduates, money is a factor, so we created this list to help give them some guidance.”
