RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (Oct. 20, 2011) – Mercury Insurance is teaming up with the City of Rancho Cucamonga in the largest earthquake drill in the United States – “The Great California ShakeOut” – on Thurs, Oct. 20 at 10:20 a.m. This arrangement will provide an opportunity for the City’s fire and police departments to train with a local business, as well as, specially trained employees to prepare them both for future disasters.
“Our employees are our number one asset,” said Mercury Insurance Senior HR Business Partner Dana Taylor. “This partnership with the City of Rancho Cucamonga will help train a number of employees in emergency response techniques that can save lives and will allow us to incorporate that training into Mercury offices across the state, adding to our culture of preparedness.”
Fifteen Mercury Insurance employees recently participated in a 20-hour, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) course taught by the City and the fire department of Rancho Cucamonga. The purpose of the course was to teach employees the basics of first aid, search and rescue, and fire suppression duties in the event of a major disaster. These Mercury employees would act as first responders in a disaster until the fire department or other rescue workers are able to arrive.
Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey predict a 67% chance of magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquake striking the Los Angeles area in the next 30 years.
“This was a unique opportunity to give hands-on, functional training to employees of one of our city’s largest employers,” said Breanna Medina, emergency management analyst for the City of Rancho Cucamonga. “It’s training that will save lives, and help both Mercury Insurance, and our city’s first responders in the event of a catastrophic earthquake.”
