CARLSBAD, Calif.

LA COSTA RESORT & SPA -- Mercury Insurance Group, one of California's leading automobile insurance companies and title sponsor of the Mercury Insurance Open Presented by Tri-City Medical Center, donated $10,000 to the Tri-City Hospital Foundation at a pre-tournament launch event. The donation - which kicked off the hospital's Triumph over Breast Cancer fundraiser - will serve as seed money for the purchase of state-of-the-art breast biopsy equipment for the Edgar and Jo Anne Jones Women's Diagnostic Center.

"At Mercury, we pride ourselves on providing California families with a quality product and superior service," said Gabe Tirador, president and CEO. "These are the same values held by Tri-City Medical Center and its staff of healthcare professionals. We recognize that hard work and dedication, and we are proud to join with the Tri-City team to help bring this cutting-edge treatment and detection technology to those who need it most."

Although approximately 40,000 women in the U.S. die each year of breast cancer, death rates have been decreasing since 1990. These decreases are largely thought to be the result of increased awareness, earlier detection screenings and treatment advances.

The $10,000 check - which was presented to Tri-City Medical Center CEO Larry Anderson and Tri-City Hospital Foundation Chair Craig Lindholm - helped launch Tri-City Medical Center's Triumph Over Breast Cancer campaign, which will include a benefit auction event at the Mercury Insurance Open on Aug. 5.

Mercury's donation - and proceeds from the Triumph Over Breast Cancer Benefit Auction - will fund the most advanced technology available for minimally invasive, highly accurate breast biopsies.

"With the Stereotactic Breast Biopsy system, we will be able to detect cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages through a non-surgical procedure that is more comfortable for our patients," said Larry Anderson, CEO of Tri-City Medical Center. "We thank Mercury for its generous support of Tri-City and the women of our community."

The Triumph Over Breast Cancer Benefit Auction is Thursday, Aug. 5 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling 760-930-7032.

The 2010 Mercury Insurance Open Presented by Tri-City Medical Center is scheduled for July 31 through Aug. 8 at the La Costa Resort and Spa. A Premier 700 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event offering $700,000 in prize money, the Mercury Insurance Open marks the return of women's professional tennis to Carlsbad after a two-year hiatus and is one of the 10 events in the Olympus U.S. Open Series.
